Ukraine Reports over 300,000 Russian Casualties Since 2026

Ukraine’s General Staff announced on September 15 that Russian forces have incurred 301,030 killed and wounded personnel since the beginning of 2026. The statement highlights a sharp increase in attrition rates following the conclusion of the summer offensive, with cumulative losses since the full-scale invasion began now surpassing 1.5 million according to Kyiv’s military leadership.

The reported figures suggest that the recent months have been among the most costly for Moscow, with the General Staff estimating that these losses are equivalent to the strength of approximately 150 motorized rifle regiments. This assessment underscores the sustained pressure on Russian manpower reserves as the conflict enters its fourth year.

Summer offensive drives record monthly tolls

According to the General Staff, the heaviest losses occurred during the three summer months, totaling 124,170 casualties. July recorded a peak of 42,860, described as the highest monthly figure since the war began, while August also exceeded 40,000. As of September 15, Russian losses for the current month had already reached 20,360, maintaining a pace of roughly 30,000 casualties per month throughout 2026.

Tactical reliance on infantry waves

A Ukrainian electronic warfare operator speaking to the Kyiv Independent under the callsign 'Strada' attributed the high casualty count to Russian tactics that prioritize infantry assaults over other methods. Strada noted that Moscow frequently deploys troops in waves to overwhelm defensive positions, relying on manpower as a primary tool for advancing ground.

While acknowledging the intensity of summer fighting, Strada warned that such tactics are straining Russian resources. The operator argued that the continuous accumulation of losses is beginning to degrade the quality of personnel, training standards, and the ability to form combat-ready units, suggesting a long-term impact on operational capacity.

The General Staff noted that it took approximately two years and three months for Russian forces to reach their first 500,000 casualties, yet a similar number has been incurred in the last 15 months. Total Russian personnel losses in Ukraine now exceed the combined toll suffered by Soviet and Russian forces in all armed conflicts from the mid-20th century through the early 21st century.
