Officials Deny Reports of Kurdish Migrant Deaths in Mediterranean

Reports circulating on social media regarding a migrant vessel sinking in the Mediterranean Sea have not been substantiated by official sources. According to Bakir Ali, head of the Association of Returned Refugees, claims that 18 migrants, including ten Kurds from the Raparin Independent Administration, perished while crossing from Libya to Italy lack official confirmation.

Ali cautioned families against reacting to unverified information, noting that neither Libyan nor Italian authorities have acknowledged a boat sinking or the deaths of unidentified migrants. He emphasized that until concrete evidence emerges, such narratives should be treated as rumors rather than established facts.

Stranded Migrants Face Uncertain Situations

Beyond the unverified drowning claims, the association highlighted a broader crisis of displacement. Ali reported that more than 200 Kurdish migrants are currently stranded in Libya or have unknown whereabouts. Additionally, he identified 21 specific individuals as missing, underscoring the difficulty in tracking those who have attempted irregular migration routes.

Repatriation Efforts Continue Amidst Delays

Efforts to secure the return of detained migrants are ongoing, though progress remains slow. According to Ali, three migrants are expected to be repatriated to the Kurdistan Region by the end of this week or early next week. Concurrently, diplomatic efforts are underway to secure the release and return of another ten individuals.
