Ethereum and Base are implementing different account abstraction standards. Joint efforts to agree on a shared specification broke down last week. Derek Chiang, a researcher at Ethlabs, confirmed the split in a Monday post. The two networks will now pursue distinct technical paths for wallet functionality.
Failed Talks Create Divergence
Interoperability goals became secondary to individual network objectives. Chiang noted that this puts the burden on wallet developers. They must now support separate transaction formats to maintain user consistency. This divergence forces applications to handle two distinct authorization methods.
Ethereum is advancing Frame Transactions under proposal EIP-8141. This item serves as a headliner for the upcoming Hegotá upgrade. The upgrade aims to introduce native account abstraction. It also creates a path toward post-quantum authentication features.
Base Develops Separate Keystore
Base is developing its own native account abstraction system. This effort relies on the Keystore standard defined in EIP-8130. The proposal is currently live on a development network. It represents a distinct approach from Ethereum’s mainnet plans.
Chiang argues that this separation allows both networks to innovate freely. They can tailor solutions to their specific visions. The split reflects different priorities between layer-1 and layer-2 networks. Layer-1 networks prioritize censorship resistance and privacy. Layer-2 networks focus more on scalability.
Hegotá Upgrade Timeline
Ethereum developers may begin implementing Hegotá in late 2026. This follows the Glamsterdam upgrade. Glamsterdam is expected to launch on mainnet in the second half of 2026.
