Unlock periods for staked assets range from zero to 28 days, forcing ETF sponsors to hold unstaked reserves.

Unlock times for staked cryptocurrency vary by up to 28 days across major blockchains. Cardano requires no waiting period, while Polkadot mandates 28 days. This disparity forces ETF sponsors to maintain significant unstaked reserves to cover redemptions.

Network data from September 13, 2026, shows Ethereum withdrawals take approximately eight days. Solana requires about 1.5 days, and Cosmos Hub takes exactly 21 days. These durations are driven by protocol rules rather than market demand.

Protocol Mechanics Drive Delay

Lock-up periods allow networks to detect and punish validator misconduct. Slashing mechanisms seize funds from validators who sign contradictory blocks. Chains without slashing for delegators impose no waiting period.

Ethereum uses three distinct timing mechanisms. The exit queue was empty on the measurement date. A sweep process handles up to 16 withdrawals per block. The churn limit caps validator exits at 256 per epoch.

Ethereum Liquidity Constraints

35.25% of Ethereum supply is currently staked. This equals 43.0 million ETH with a 2.46% annual yield. A queue of 1.84 million ETH waits for activation. New stakers face a 31-day delay.

ETF Reserve Strategies

iShares files indicate a policy to stake 70% to 95% of assets. Sponsors keep unstaked liquidity for redemption requests. Higher staking ratios increase yield but reduce immediate cash availability.

Morgan Stanley proposes a Solana trust with a two-day unstaking window. The firm plans broader staking ETFs for Ethereum and Solana. Solana epochs last approximately 38 hours based on slot duration. GN markets/crypto (en-US) reports these structural differences impact fund management.
