Indian benchmarks recovered on Wednesday after a sharp drop, with the Sensex gaining 0.45 percent and the Nifty crossing the 23,200 level.

The BSE Sensex closed at 74,336.45, up 332.63 points. This gain represents a 0.45 percent increase for the 30-share index. The NSE Nifty finished at 23,217.60, adding 99 points to its total. Both indices reversed part of the previous day's losses. The market session was driven by value buying in financial sectors.

Bank stocks were the primary engines of this rally. The Bank Nifty index reclaimed the 56,000 mark during trading. State Bank of India and Axis Bank recorded significant gains. These heavyweight firms provided the necessary support to lift the broader market. The recovery followed a session where indices hit three-month lows.

Global factors constrain upside potential

Brent crude oil prices remained elevated between USD 107 and USD 108 per barrel. This cost pressure limits the momentum of the Indian market rebound. The US 10-year Treasury yield also held near 5 percent. Investors await the Federal Reserve's policy announcement for further direction. High yields in the US create headwinds for emerging markets.

Foreign Institutional Investors sold equities worth Rs 2,977.86 crore on Tuesday. This outflow reflects caution among global capital providers. Despite this, Asian markets generally ended in positive territory on Wednesday. The Kospi, Nikkei 225, and Hang Seng indices all closed higher. European markets were also trading higher during the session.

Sectoral performance shows mixed results

Among the 30 Sensex constituents, ITC was a major winner. Trent and Mahindra & Mahindra also posted strong gains. Bharat Electronics contributed to the positive movement in the index. Conversely, technology stocks lagged behind the broader market. Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys saw their shares decline. Tech Mahindra and Bajaj Finserv were among the other laggards.

Market context and recent trends

The previous session saw the Sensex tumble 777.94 points. That drop of 1.04 percent pushed the index to a three-month low. The Nifty fell 279.50 points to its lowest close since April 6. Wednesday's action was a measured recovery from that sharp decline. Analysts note that the rebound lacks strong momentum due to external pressures. According to data cited by Rediff MoneyWiz, these factors continue to weigh on sentiment.
