Arafura Rare Earths Chair Mark Southey Steps Down After Eight Years

Mark Southey departs Arafura Rare Earths following the October AGM, handing over leadership as construction for the Nolans project begins.
Arafura Rare Earths confirmed that chair Mark Southey will resign from the board after the company’s annual general meeting on October 22. This departure concludes his eight-year tenure, a period defined by the advancement of the Nolans rare earth project in the Northern Territory. The transition coincides with the company entering its construction phase, following a final investment decision made earlier this year.
Southey assumed the chair role in February 2019, guiding the firm through critical stages of board renewal and capital structuring. His leadership oversaw the completion of the definitive feasibility study and the execution of a mixed debt and equity funding strategy. These financial maneuvers secured the resources necessary to move the project from development to the imminent start of physical construction.
Nolans Project Enters Construction Phase
The board’s recent final investment decision marks the pivotal shift from planning to execution for the Nolans facility. Southey’s tenure was instrumental in stabilizing the company’s financial position, allowing it to secure the capital required for this infrastructure build-out. Managing director Darryl Cuzzubbo noted that Southey was present before any construction funding was secured, steering the organization through its most uncertain development stages.
Cuzzubbo emphasized that the transition to construction represents a tangible realization of the strategic goals set during the previous administration. The company is now positioned to deliver one of Australia’s significant strategic assets, focusing on processing rare earths ore into oxide. This operational shift aims to establish Arafura as a key player in the global supply chain for critical minerals.
Search For New Chair Underway
Arafura has initiated a recruitment process to identify Southey’s successor, evaluating both internal and external candidates. The company intends to provide an update on the appointment at or before the October 22 AGM. Southey cited the depth of expertise on the current board as a factor in his decision to step down, aiming to create headroom for change and ensure an orderly transition of leadership.
Strategic Positioning In Global Markets
The outgoing chair expressed confidence that Arafura is prepared to execute its next phase of development. He stated that the company’s trajectory supports its goal of becoming a global player in rare earths processing. The departure is framed as a planned rotation rather than a reactive move, allowing the board to refresh its leadership structure as the company moves into its operational era.
