China's Aluminium Sector Holds Output Steady Amid Seasonal Lull

Aluminium sheet and foil producers in China maintained robust production levels in August, defying typical seasonal slowdowns as order books remained full ahead of the peak consumption period.
China's aluminium sheet, strip, and foil sector demonstrated resilience during the traditional off-season, with weekly output in August holding steady near 390,000 tonnes. This figure represents only a modest 10,000 tonne weekly decline from July peaks, significantly outperforming the sharp drops typically observed in this period in previous years. The sector maintained an average operating rate of 70 per cent, a level that remains high for this time of year and well above the troughs seen in prior cycles.
The stability in production was driven by a backlog of orders secured during July, when aluminium prices hovered in the lower range of RMB 22,500 to 23,000 per tonne. Downstream fabricators and end-users aggressively replenished inventories during this window, extending the order books of top producers into late August. As prices rose above RMB 24,000 per tonne in August, new buying slowed, but the continuous delivery of these previously secured contracts allowed manufacturers to keep production schedules full without passive inventory accumulation.
Regional operational stability persists
Operational strength was distributed across key industrial hubs, with leading enterprises in Shandong and Henan maintaining operating rates above 85 per cent. In core consumption regions such as Guangdong and Jiangsu, processing firms posted rates slightly above the national average, supported by sustained demand from electric vehicle and solar photovoltaic aluminium extrusion. This geographic stability indicates that the sector's performance is not reliant on a single region but is broadly supported by diversified downstream needs.
The product mix has also evolved, with a rising share of high-value-added items such as aluminium foil, PS plate stock, and alloy sheets for electric vehicles. This shift toward differentiated, high-end products has helped manufacturers maintain margins and volume despite the seasonal price fluctuations. The strategic focus on these segments provides a buffer against volatility in the primary metal market.
Inventory levels remain disciplined
Finished goods inventories at sheet, strip, and foil enterprises remained at reasonably low levels through July and August 2026. Initial rapid drawdowns in early July were driven by concentrated deliveries against low-price orders. As prices climbed later in the quarter, producers proactively adjusted output to balance supply with the slowing offtake, preventing the passive accumulation of stock that often characterizes this period. This disciplined inventory management reflects a more efficient approach to supply chain balance.
Peak season demand release expected
With traders' inventories of primary aluminium falling to a low of 790,000 tonnes, the stage is set for increased downstream offtake as the traditional peak consumption season approaches. Many leading enterprises have already extended their production schedules into mid-September, indicating confidence in continued demand. The sector is positioned to capitalize on the upcoming surge in consumption, with operating rates and output poised for a fresh upswing as the market transitions into its busiest phase.
