GlobalFoundries shares climbed in premarket trading after reports indicated the firm may operate a new US semiconductor facility funded by Japanese capital under a broader trade agreement.

GlobalFoundries stock rose more than 2 percent in premarket trading on Thursday following a Nikkei report that the company is a leading candidate to operate a new semiconductor plant in the United States. This initiative represents a pivot in how Japan fulfills its obligations under recent tariff negotiations. Previously, Japanese commitments to the US were largely centered on energy projects, but this proposal extends those efforts into high-tech manufacturing. The move supports the administration's strategy of using trade leverage and federal incentives to drive local production, a tactic that has also prompted massive expansions from competitors like TSMC, Samsung, and Intel.

TSMC has already committed $265 billion to US fabrication and packaging, including twelve new facilities in Arizona. Meanwhile, Samsung is constructing advanced facilities in Texas, and Intel is expanding operations in Arizona and Ohio. GlobalFoundries would join this cohort of major foundries building domestic capacity, reinforcing the trend of reshoring semiconductor manufacturing away from Asia.

Recent Domestic Manufacturing Milestones

The potential new plant would complement GlobalFoundries' existing US-focused initiatives. The company recently secured a $375 million award from the US Commerce Department to accelerate its quantum semiconductor business and domestic manufacturing capabilities. This government support underscores the firm's growing role in the national semiconductor ecosystem, particularly in specialized areas like power solutions and wide-bandgap technologies.

Recent commercial partnerships have further solidified this domestic presence. GlobalFoundries began shipping US-manufactured GaN chips in collaboration with Navitas Semiconductor and partnered with Monolithic Power Systems to produce high-performance power solutions. These moves demonstrate the company's ability to deliver on government incentives and commercial demand simultaneously, creating a more robust foundation for future expansion.

Market Reaction And Share Performance

Retail sentiment on platforms covered by GN auto stocks/technology: chip stocks has turned bullish, though some traders expressed frustration with the stock's long-term trajectory. One user noted that despite improved prospects, the share price remained similar to levels from two years ago.
