Semicon 2.0 Approval Fuels Indian Chip Sector Rally

Indian semiconductor equities surged on Thursday as SEMICON India 2026 opened in New Delhi, driven by the recent approval of the Rs 1.275 trillion Semicon 2.0 initiative and a projected $110 billion domestic demand by FY2030.
Semiconductor and electronics manufacturing stocks posted significant gains on Thursday, September 17, 2026, coinciding with the opening of SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi. The three-day event, themed "Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem," served as a catalyst for investor interest in companies across the domestic chip value chain. The rally reflects a broader market shift toward firms benefiting from India's accelerated industrial policy in electronics and microelectronics.
Syrma SGS Technology led the sectoral performance, climbing 8.23% on the day. MosChip Technologies followed with a 5.19% increase, while Kaynes Technology India gained 4.29%. Other notable movers included Dixon Technologies, which advanced 1.08%, and Avalon Technologies, rising 0.05%. These price actions underscore the market's reaction to the government's intensified support for domestic manufacturing capabilities, moving beyond policy announcements to tangible supply chain participation.
Semicon 2.0 Allocates Massive Capital
The Union Cabinet approved the Semicon 2.0 initiative in July 2026, allocating Rs 1,27,500 crore to expand India's semiconductor infrastructure. This program targets specific industrial gaps, including chip design, machine and material development, new fabrication plants, and advanced packaging. The financial commitment signals a structural shift in the industry's funding landscape, providing the capital necessary for companies to scale operations and integrate into global supply chains.
Building on the earlier Semicon 1.0 program, which approved 12 manufacturing units with cumulative investments exceeding Rs 1.64 lakh crore, the new policy phase aims to accelerate commercialization. Five of the units approved under the first phase have already commenced commercial production. This transition from approval to operational status provides a concrete track record for investors evaluating the sector's execution capabilities and long-term revenue potential.
Domestic Demand Projected to Double
Government projections indicate that India's semiconductor demand will reach $110 billion by FY2030, surpassing $200 billion by FY2035. These figures suggest a substantial expansion of the addressable market for domestic manufacturers and suppliers. The growth trajectory is driven by increasing local consumption and the strategic goal of reducing import dependence in critical technology sectors, creating a sustained tailwind for companies involved in testing, packaging, and component assembly.
The event in New Delhi brought together over 600 companies and representatives from 52 countries, highlighting the international dimension of India's semiconductor push. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the conference, emphasizing the government's role in fostering an ecosystem that connects researchers, startups, and academic institutions with industry leaders. This multi-stakeholder approach is designed to address talent shortages and technological bottlenecks that have historically constrained the sector's growth.
Global Participation in Local Ecosystem
The participation of 52 countries in SEMICON India 2026 underscores the global relevance of India's emerging semiconductor hub. The conference featured country and state pavilions, a startup showcase, and an innovation display, facilitating direct engagement between policymakers and industry players. For equities listed on Indian exchanges, this visibility enhances the narrative of India as a viable alternative manufacturing destination, potentially attracting further foreign direct investment and technology partnerships.
Investors are increasingly focusing on companies that can leverage these policy advantages to capture market share in electronics manufacturing and semiconductor services. The convergence of significant fiscal support, rising domestic demand, and international engagement creates a favorable environment for sectoral growth. As the industry moves from policy formulation to commercial execution, the performance of these stocks will likely be determined by their ability to deliver on capacity expansion and operational efficiency targets.
