Applied Digital Slides as AI Peer Stocks Face Sector-Wide Pullback

Applied Digital shares fell 4%, pushing 2026 returns negative amid a broad retreat in AI hosting equities.
Applied Digital (NASDAQ: APLD) shares declined 4% to $23.72 on Tuesday, reversing a year of gains and placing the stock 3% below its 2026 starting level. The move marked a sharp reversal for a title previously viewed as a leading play on AI capacity, capping a month of consistent losses across the digital infrastructure sector. The decline was not driven by company-specific news but rather by a broader market reassessment of the leveraged buildout models employed by AI hosting firms.
Peer companies experienced similar pressure, with Core Scientific (NASDAQ: CORZ) dropping 5% to $16.20 and Cipher Mining (NASDAQ: CIFR) sliding 4% to $15.04. While Core Scientific and Cipher Mining remain positive for the year, Applied Digital is now furthest behind its initial value. According to GN stocks/nasdaq reporting, the selling is concentrated in this specific segment, as broader infrastructure funds like the Global X Data Center ETF fell only 0.6% and the S&P 500 ETF declined 0.5%.
Quarterly Results And Financial Targets
Applied Digital’s fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 results, reported on July 27, indicated revenue of $258.7 million and adjusted EBITDA of $42.4 million. Management has set a target to reach $1 billion in annualized net operating income within one year, a milestone currently projected to be achieved three years ahead of schedule. The company’s bull case is anchored by $36 billion in total contracted long-term lease value and 1.41 gigawatts of contracted critical IT load, metrics that underpin the long-term revenue visibility of its data center operations.
Structural Risks And Balance Sheet Pressure
The recent sell-off highlights structural concerns regarding Applied Digital’s $2.7 billion debt load. As share prices fall, the cost of the equity component in new buildouts rises, increasing dilution risk for existing shareholders. This dynamic is a key factor in how the market values the company, as the financing logic for the entire AI hosting cohort depends on stable or rising equity valuations to support capital-intensive expansion.
Peer Performance And Sector Context
Core Scientific carries a 15-year partnership with AMD covering approximately 530 megawatts, with potential contracted revenue exceeding $14 billion. However, its most recent quarter included a $1.05 billion non-cash warrant charge. Cipher Mining’s Black Pearl facility came online two months early, yet its June quarter missed revenue and earnings-per-share expectations. Applied Digital’s CEO cited hyperscaler capital expenditure rising from $400 billion to $700 billion, a figure that supports the sector’s growth thesis but is currently being discounted by investors wary of leverage.
