Bitdeer Pivots from Bitcoin Mining to AI Cloud Infrastructure

Bitdeer is repurposing its massive power facilities to host AI workloads, aiming to stabilize revenue against volatile Bitcoin prices.
Bitdeer is expanding its business beyond Bitcoin mining to build a comprehensive AI cloud platform. This strategic shift allows the company to leverage its existing data center infrastructure for artificial intelligence workloads, creating a second revenue stream that is less dependent on cryptocurrency market fluctuations.
The move addresses a critical challenge in the mining industry: the narrow profit margins resulting from rising electricity costs and falling hash prices. By offering AI computing services, Bitdeer can generate income based on GPU utilization and customer contracts rather than solely on the price of Bitcoin, providing a more predictable financial outlook.
Mining margins squeeze profit potential
According to data from Hashrate Index, the daily revenue per unit of hash power has declined significantly. For a miner operating at efficient levels, the gross revenue generated by one megawatt of power barely covers the electricity bill and basic operating costs. This leaves little room for profit after accounting for hardware depreciation and maintenance.
In contrast, AI cloud revenue is tied to the demand for computing power and the rates charged for access. This model decouples earnings from the volatile Bitcoin market, allowing infrastructure owners to monetize their power capacity through long-term subscriptions and service agreements, as reported by TechBullion.
Full-stack services offer competitive pricing
Bitdeer’s AI cloud platform provides a range of services, from virtual machines to distributed training and inference. The company offers access to high-end NVIDIA GPUs, including the H100, H200, and B200 series. Its pricing strategy is aggressive, with rates for these chips positioned significantly below major competitors like Runpod and Hyperstack.
The lower prices aim to attract customers who need reliable and cost-effective computing resources. Bitdeer has already deployed over 4,000 GPUs with a high utilization rate, indicating strong initial demand. This approach contrasts with competitors who focus primarily on data center leasing or specific GPU-as-a-service models, offering a more integrated solution for enterprise clients.
Industry peers adopt varied strategies
Other companies in the Bitcoin infrastructure sector are also diversifying into AI, but they take different approaches. Some focus on vertically integrated cloud services, while others emphasize colocation or long-term leases with major technology firms. Bitdeer’s strategy is distinct in its emphasis on a full-stack platform that includes both infrastructure and software tools.
The trade-off for Bitdeer is the need to manage a more complex technology stack and compete on service quality and price. While the AI market offers a buffer against mining volatility, it requires significant investment in software development and customer support. The success of this pivot will depend on the company’s ability to maintain high GPU utilization and attract a steady stream of enterprise clients.
