GlobalFoundries and Marvell are expanding production of a specific semiconductor type to handle the massive data flow demands of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
GlobalFoundries and Marvell Technology have deepened their partnership to increase the manufacturing capacity of silicon germanium chips. These components are critical for the high-speed optical connections that keep artificial intelligence data centers running. The move comes as the industry struggles to keep pace with the exponential growth in data processing requirements driven by AI workloads.
The expanded agreement focuses on boosting output at GlobalFoundries' facility in Burlington, Vermont. By securing more production slots for this specific technology, Marvell aims to ensure a steady supply of advanced optical networking products. This includes items like pluggable transceivers and co-packaged optics, which are essential for moving data quickly between servers without excessive energy consumption.
Silicon Germanium Enables Faster Data Flow
Silicon germanium is a material blend that allows semiconductors to operate at higher speeds while using less power than standard silicon alternatives. In the context of AI data centers, where vast amounts of information must be transmitted instantly, this efficiency is crucial.
