A majority of American adults are now deeply worried about the environmental costs of artificial intelligence, driven by the rapid expansion of data centers. These facilities require massive amounts of electricity to run their computing operations and significant volumes of water for cooling, placing new pressure on local infrastructure.
The shift in public sentiment is clear. Recent survey data indicates that 53% of U.S. adults are extremely or very concerned about AI’s environmental impact, a notable increase from 41% last year. This growing anxiety is not just abstract; it is tied to tangible worries about rising electricity prices and the depletion of local water supplies.
Local Utilities Face New Stress
The demand for power is projected to grow sharply. Estimates suggest that data centers could account for nearly 12% of total U.S. electricity consumption by 2030. For smaller communities, the water usage issue is particularly acute. While national consumption remains modest, a single large facility can place a substantial, concentrated load on a local water system, creating a trade-off between technological growth and resource stability.
Public Support for Regulatory Limits
As concerns mount, public opinion is moving toward stricter oversight. Approximately six in ten Americans support limiting the number of new data centers that can be built. There is also strong backing for mandates that require these facilities to use clean energy sources, such as wind or solar power, to mitigate their carbon footprint.
This regulatory pressure comes from all sides.
