Google is bringing iMessage integration to the Gemini app for macOS, allowing users to send and read texts directly through the AI assistant. However, the feature is currently limited to plain text and lacks support for media or reactions.

Google has updated its Gemini application for macOS to include direct access to Apple’s iMessage service. According to reports from 9to5Mac, this addition allows the AI assistant to read, search, and send messages to contacts. The update arrives shortly after the app expanded to Windows, signaling a broader push to integrate artificial intelligence into everyday communication tools across different operating systems.

The integration works by connecting the Gemini app to the local Messages database on your Mac. This means the AI can look up recent conversations, find specific unread messages, or even draft and send a text to a saved contact or phone number. For users who frequently switch between typing and thinking, this could reduce the friction of opening a separate messaging app to check a detail or reply to a colleague.

Capabilities Remain Limited to Text

While the ability to automate text exchanges is convenient, the feature comes with significant restrictions. Gemini cannot send photos, files, or any media attachments, meaning all communication is restricted to plain text. Additionally, the AI cannot manage group chat settings, such as adding or removing participants, nor can it edit messages after they have been sent. Users also cannot send tapback reactions like hearts or thumbs up through the assistant.

These limitations matter for anyone hoping to use Gemini as a full replacement for manual messaging. If your workflow involves sending receipts, location pins, or quick visual confirmations, the AI will not be able to handle those tasks. The integration is best suited for users who primarily rely on text-based communication and want to streamline the process of retrieving information from their message history.

Setup Issues and Missing Components

Despite the rollout, the feature is not fully operational for everyone. Reports indicate that a server-side component appears to be missing, causing the iMessage connection to fail for some users. Specifically, the @messages command is not being recognized in the prompt box, preventing the AI from accessing the messaging database. This suggests that the backend infrastructure is still being finalized even though the client-side option is visible in the settings.

To access the feature, users must update the Gemini app to version 1.116.5.889. The option appears at the bottom of the Connected Apps section in Settings. If you are unable to use the feature, it may simply be a matter of waiting for Google to resolve the server-side issues. Until then, the integration remains a partial tool rather than a complete communication hub.

New Finder Integration for Files

Alongside the messaging update, Google introduced a File Providers extension for macOS. This allows users to right-click on any file in Finder and select
