The reluctance stems from a desire for oversight rather than a rejection of technology itself. While shoppers embrace AI features that save money, they draw a sharp line at the point of transaction. The data suggests that merchants face a challenge in making AI-driven purchases feel as secure and controllable as traditional shopping methods.

Price Tools Outperform Style Advice

The survey, which polled over 3,300 consumers, shows that practical utility drives adoption more than stylistic recommendation. Price drop alerts and cross-retailer comparisons were the most valued features, each selected by 35% of respondents. In contrast, personalized product recommendations and outfit suggestions lagged significantly, attracting interest from only 18% and 17% of shoppers respectively.

This preference highlights a clear trade-off: consumers trust AI to find better deals but do not trust it to define their style. Interest in these practical tools is particularly strong among older demographics, with 40% of adults aged 45 to 54 valuing price alerts, compared to just 27% of those aged 18 to 24. The data indicates that AI features that compare prices succeed because they add insight without removing the user's final say.

Trust Deficit Hinders Autonomous Shopping

The barrier to adoption is primarily psychological rather than technical. Fifty-three percent of participants expressed discomfort with AI making purchases on their behalf. Another 20% would accept AI recommendations but insist on making the final decision themselves. Only 14% would require manual approval for every AI-initiated transaction, while the small 7% minority would permit autonomous buying under specific conditions.

Industry experts note that this hesitation is rooted in a lack of transparency and control. Shoppers want AI to inform their decisions, not make them. For retailers to bridge this gap, they must demonstrate that their systems are reliable, transparent, and safely constrained. Without this proof, the leap of faith required for autonomous purchasing remains too large for most consumers.

Payment Failures Drive Customer Loss

Beyond trust issues, the reliability of the payment process itself remains a critical factor in conversion. The report emphasizes that as shopping experiences become more AI-enabled, payment performance must remain flawless. Consumers who have experienced payment failures are likely to abandon their carts or switch to competitors, regardless of whether the purchase was initiated by a human or an algorithm.

Specifically, 39% of consumers who encountered an online payment failure abandoned the purchase entirely. Another 22% switched to a different retailer, while 53% attempted to complete the transaction using an alternative payment method. These figures suggest that even as AI tools become more sophisticated, the infrastructure behind the checkout must be robust to maintain consumer confidence.
