OpenAI's chief financial officer argues that artificial intelligence is taking over repetitive administrative duties, allowing human staff to focus on complex problem-solving rather than routine data entry.

Sarah Friar, the chief financial officer at OpenAI, has stated that her company is using its own products to reduce headcount for specific, repetitive finance roles. Speaking on CNBC, she clarified that this reduction targets tasks she describes as mundane, such as processing credit checks, rather than complex strategic work.

Friar explained that OpenAI’s procurement team previously handled roughly 2,800 credit checks annually. By shifting this workload to an AI model, the company significantly lowered costs and increased accuracy. This shift allows junior analysts to move toward higher-value tasks that require human intelligence and judgment.

Drastic Cost Reductions in Procurement

The financial impact of automating these checks was substantial. Friar noted that the cost per credit check dropped from approximately $200 to just 17 cents. She described this as a strong return on investment, highlighting that the AI model performed the rote work with greater scale and precision than manual processing.

Contrasting Views on Job Displacement

These comments stand in contrast to starker warnings from other AI leaders. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has suggested that AI could eliminate half of entry-level white-collar positions. Geoffrey Hinton, a Nobel Prize-winning computer scientist, recently agreed with these predictions, noting that while AI still has limitations, it is improving rapidly.

Hinton emphasized that we are in the early stages of this technological shift. He cautioned that the technology is evolving quickly, which may mean that the impact on employment is accelerating faster than many in the industry previously anticipated.

Shifting Focus to High-Value Work

Friar argues that the goal is not to eliminate human roles entirely, but to reallocate them. By offloading repetitive data processing to machines, companies can free up employees to work on the edge of their capabilities. This approach aims to leverage human creativity and critical thinking in areas where AI still struggles.
