Oracle is deepening its workforce reductions to offset the massive capital costs required for its new artificial intelligence data centers, pushing total restructuring expenses to $2.8 billion.

Oracle has added $700 million to its planned restructuring costs for fiscal 2026, bringing the total financial adjustment to $2.8 billion. The financial impact is already visible in cash flow metrics. Oracle reported negative free cash flow of $5.4 billion in its latest quarter. The company is effectively borrowing against its future operational efficiency to pay for today’s hardware expansion.

Strong demand offsets financial strain

Despite the heavy spending, demand for Oracle’s services remains robust. The company’s contracted revenue backlog has grown by $26 billion to reach $664 billion. Approximately half of this value is expected to be realized as sales over the next three years. This provides a degree of financial predictability, though it does not negate the immediate liquidity pressure caused by the infrastructure build-out.

The strategy represents a high-stakes trade-off. Oracle is sacrificing short-term cash flow and workforce stability to secure long-term dominance in the AI market. By shrinking its cost base through layoffs, the company aims to maintain operational viability while competing for a slice of the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market.

Restructuring beyond simple cost cuts

The scale of the $2.8 billion restructuring program indicates a fundamental shift in how Oracle manages its resources.
