Penn Medicine Rolls Out Clinical AI for Global Teams

Approximately 10,000 clinicians at the University of Pennsylvania Health System will soon use a specialized AI tool to support diagnosis and treatment decisions.
The University of Pennsylvania Health System has announced a partnership with OpenEvidence to provide its clinicians with access to a specialized artificial intelligence chatbot. This tool is designed to assist physicians with clinical decision-making, offering immediate access to medical evidence for diagnoses and treatment options. The rollout marks a significant step in integrating advanced AI into daily medical practice, aiming to reduce the time doctors spend searching through academic literature.

It includes doctors participating in the Botswana-UPenn Partnership, a long-standing collaboration focused on improving healthcare capacity in sub-Saharan Africa. The goal is to ensure that high-quality medical evidence is available to practitioners in diverse and often resource-limited settings, not just those in well-funded urban hospitals.
Supporting Global Health Collaborations
The partnership emphasizes the need for tools that are rigorously tested and tailored to specific regional contexts. Farouk Dako, a director for academic partnerships in global health, noted that this collaboration serves as a model for extending technology to partners in the global south. The aim is to build systems that account for the particular challenges of practicing medicine in regions with different resource availability and patient demographics.
Travis Zack, Chief Medical Officer at OpenEvidence, stated that the best medical evidence should reach every clinician. By working with academic partners, the company is evaluating how these tools perform under varied conditions. This approach recognizes that most of the world practices medicine outside of the best-resourced hospitals, requiring solutions that are both robust and adaptable.
Balancing Efficiency and Patient Privacy
The tool offers several practical features, including the ability to write discharge notes and provide study aids for medical exams. It allows clinicians to request specific evidence without spending hours sifting through articles. However, the implementation comes with strict boundaries regarding data privacy and compliance.
It is important to note that this specific tool is distinct from the general Claude Enterprise platform recently rolled out to the broader university community. While the university-wide version is available to faculty and students, it was not approved for use in HIPAA-covered environments such as Penn Medicine. This distinction ensures that patient data remains protected within the clinical setting, adhering to strict regulatory standards for health information.
Integrating AI into Daily Practice
Srinath Adusumalli, the Chief Health Information Officer, described the partnership as a mission to extend clinical excellence to areas where it can have the greatest impact. The tool is intended to surface the best available evidence in the context of the patient in front of the doctor. This integration aims to streamline workflows and support better outcomes through immediate access to relevant information.
Faculty members have already been using various AI technologies for pattern detection and risk prediction. This new addition expands those capabilities to direct clinical support. The move reflects a broader trend in healthcare where artificial intelligence is becoming a standard part of the diagnostic toolkit, provided it is deployed with careful consideration for accuracy and ethical use.
