By focusing exclusively on what AI might take away, society misses the opportunity to define what it should give. The researchers argue that this imbalance prevents the development of tools and frameworks that could address existing injustices, leaving the technology to define its own role without societal input.

A central theme in the findings is the erosion of agency in educational settings. Students report feeling pressured to use AI to remain competitive in the job market, yet they face severe backlash or suspicion if they do. This contradictory environment creates a sense of inevitability rather than choice. Faculty face similar pressures, often feeling forced to integrate AI tools into their teaching to meet institutional metrics, regardless of pedagogical fit.

This loss of choice extends beyond individual preferences to a broader democratic concern. Despite the prevailing anxiety, the research identifies a critical nuance: for some students, AI serves as a vital support system. Neurodivergent students and those in under-resourced environments often find that these tools provide accessibility and support that traditional educational structures have failed to offer. In these cases, AI is not a threat to agency but a means of reclaiming it, bridging gaps that institutional resources have left unaddressed.

This perspective challenges the binary view of AI as either purely harmful or purely beneficial. It suggests that the impact of technology is deeply context-dependent. For marginalized groups, the availability of AI tools can be a form of liberation, offering personalized learning paths and reducing barriers to entry.
