Vietnam and US Firm Study $10B Data-Center Plan

TNT Group and Infrakey signed an MoU to assess a massive AI infrastructure project. The plan could reach 1,000 MW capacity over several phases.
Key points
- TNT Group and Infrakey signed an MoU to study a data-center complex with up to 1,000 MW capacity.
- The project could require $10 billion in investment, with a first phase targeting 200 MW within 36 months.
- TNT will handle local site coordination, while Infrakey leads technical standards, financing, and feasibility studies.
Vietnam’s TNT Group and US-based developer Infrakey DC Parks have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly study a data-center complex with a potential capacity of 1,000 megawatts. The agreement, finalized in Texas, outlines a project that could require up to $10 billion in infrastructure investment to support artificial intelligence and cloud computing demands.
According to TNGlobal, the partnership aims to determine the feasible number of large-scale facilities for data storage and processing. While the final scale remains subject to further analysis, the initial framework sets a significant benchmark for Vietnam’s growing role in the regional digital economy.
Phased rollout targets 200 MW first
The proposed project is designed to unfold in stages, with a first phase targeting approximately 200 MW of capacity. TNT Group stated that power for this initial stage is intended to be secured within 36 months of identifying a site and obtaining grid allocation. Subsequent phases would expand the total capacity to the 1,000 MW target, contingent on feasibility studies, market demand, and available funding.
This phased approach reflects the high capital intensity of modern data infrastructure. By breaking the project into manageable steps, the partners aim to mitigate financial risk while testing the local energy grid’s ability to handle the load.
Roles split between local and US
The division of labor is clearly defined under the new agreement. TNT Group will manage site searches and coordinate with local authorities in Vietnam, leveraging its domestic presence. Infrakey, a subsidiary of Infrakey Capital, will lead the development model, set technical standards, and drive the financing and feasibility study process.
Infrakey is currently developing a flagship 925-MW facility in Texas, which is in its early stages. This experience is expected to inform the technical framework for the Vietnamese project, ensuring that the new sites meet international standards for efficiency and reliability.
Study stage amid regional growth
This memorandum adds to a growing list of proposed data-center projects in Vietnam as the country seeks to attract investment in AI and cloud services. However, many similar initiatives in the region remain at the study or memorandum stage, meaning that actual construction is not guaranteed.
The primary catch for investors is the dependency on grid capacity and regulatory approvals. While the potential scale is attractive, the project’s success hinges on Vietnam’s ability to provide stable, large-scale power and navigate complex local coordination, a trade-off that many foreign tech firms are currently assessing.
