Resident Evil Earns $60 Million in North American Opening

The horror adaptation of the popular video game franchise dominated the North American box office this weekend. Industry estimates reported by Yahoo indicate that Resident Evil generated approximately $60 million in its opening three days, securing the top spot in the region.

Directed by Zach Cregger and distributed by Sony, the film stars Austin Abrams as a medical courier who must navigate mutant creatures to deliver a critical package to a remote hospital. This strong debut immediately displaced last week's leader, Warner Bros' Practical Magic 2, which fell to a distant second place.

Previous box office leaders slip down

Practical Magic 2, the sequel featuring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, earned $12.2 million over the weekend. The film, which follows modern-day witches dealing with a curse affecting their romantic partners, had previously knocked Sony's Spider-Man off the top spot.

Spider-Man continued to decline, adding $6.5 million to its total. The film has now accumulated $944.5 million in the United States and Canada, maintaining its position as one of the year's strongest performers despite the weekly drop.

Mid-tier films maintain steady earnings

The Odyssey secured the fourth position with a weekend take of $4.9 million. Following it, Coyote vs Acme held steady in fifth place for the second consecutive weekend, earning $4.5 million for Falling Forward Films.

The top ten list was completed by a mix of animated and live-action titles. The Runner brought in $3.2 million, while Daniel and the Fiery Furnace and Transformers: The Movie each recorded $3.1 million.

Lower rankings show varied performance

The bottom three spots in the top ten were filled by The Weight, Buddy, and another unlisted title. The Weight earned $2.3 million, and Buddy rounded out the list with $1.9 million, indicating a significant drop-off in earnings compared to the top five films.
