MG has officially priced its new 07 electric sedan in China, positioning it as a direct challenge to established rivals like the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal. The vehicle is available in seven configurations, ranging from plug-in hybrids to long-range pure electric models, with prices starting at roughly 23,000 US dollars. This aggressive pricing strategy aims to capture market share by offering substantial range and advanced technology at a significantly lower entry point than many competitors.

The core of the 07's appeal lies in its battery technology, specifically the inclusion of semi-solid-state cells in several variants. This approach allows MG to offer different technical packages rather than just varying battery sizes. While the entry-level models use a 67kWh semi-solid-state battery, the flagship version steps up to a 91kWh conventional lithium-ion pack. This distinction is crucial because it means the most affordable cars do not get the same high-voltage charging hardware as the top-tier models, creating a clear trade-off between initial cost and long-term charging speed.

Semi-solid batteries offer safety gains

The semi-solid-state battery technology, supplied by Qingtao, is highlighted as a key differentiator for the mid-range models. According to reports from GN auto tech/ev, this technology provides better resistance to punctures and extreme temperatures compared to standard liquid-electrolyte cells. It also maintains strong charging performance in cold weather. For drivers in climates with significant temperature swings, this could translate to greater battery longevity and reliability, though it comes at the cost of slower maximum charging speeds compared to the 800V architecture found in the top-spec version.

The top-spec electric model is the only variant to feature an 800V silicon-carbide electrical architecture and 5C fast-charging capability. This setup, paired with a 91kWh battery from CATL, enables a claimed 845km range on the Chinese CLTC cycle. The vehicle also accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in approximately five seconds. This tier of the lineup is where MG invests in the most sophisticated hardware, ensuring that buyers willing to pay the premium get the fastest charging and highest performance, while lower-trim buyers accept a slower charging experience in exchange for a lower sticker price.

Hybrid options extend total range

For those concerned about charging infrastructure or long-distance travel, the 07 is also offered as a plug-in hybrid. This version combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a 30kWh battery. MG claims a combined range of 1,745km with a full tank and charged battery, along with 245km of electric-only driving. The hybrid battery can recharge from 30 to 80 percent in 15 minutes, offering a practical solution for daily commuting while eliminating range anxiety for longer trips.

The plug-in hybrid variant starts at the lowest price point of the range, making it an attractive option for buyers who want the flexibility of an internal combustion engine without sacrificing the efficiency of electric driving. The response from Chinese consumers has been strong, with thousands of orders placed within days of the launch. However, there is currently no confirmation that this specific model will be exported to markets like Australia, where it could compete with other MG electric vehicles.

Advanced features included in base trims

Even the lower-priced versions of the 07 come equipped with a substantial amount of standard hardware. The car features adaptive dampers and a vehicle-motion control system designed to improve handling stability. Higher trims add a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor and a driver-assistance system developed with Momenta. Inside the cabin, a 15.6-inch touchscreen powered by a Qualcomm processor serves as the central interface, while top-tier models include a zero-gravity passenger seat and a 21-speaker audio system.

The inclusion of LiDAR and advanced driver assistance on models priced under 35,000 dollars is notable, as these features are often reserved for much more expensive vehicles. This strategy suggests MG is prioritizing technological inclusivity, aiming to make advanced safety and convenience features accessible to a broader audience.
