New System Targets EV Front Compartment Fires

A new passive fire suppression device aims to stop electrical fires in the front of electric vehicles before they spread to the main battery.
SAFETYCAR has introduced a new fire suppression system specifically designed for electric vehicles, addressing a growing concern in the automotive sector. The device targets the front service compartment, often referred to as the frunk, where critical low-voltage electrical components are housed. By focusing on this specific area, the system aims to prevent small electrical faults from escalating into larger vehicle fires that could threaten the main high-voltage battery.
To bring this technology to the Singapore market, SAFETYCAR has appointed Tuff Clad Pte Ltd, part of the Tuffi Group, as its exclusive distributor. The partnership combines SAFETYCAR’s suppression technology with Tuffi’s established network in automotive protection. An industry session held in September allowed participants to see the installation process and understand how the system operates without requiring any complex electronic integration.
Passive technology requires no power
Unlike active suppression systems that rely on sensors, batteries, and external power, this new device operates entirely passively. It consists of a two-and-a-half-meter tube filled with a specialized clean agent. The tube is routed around the electrical components in the front compartment. When the temperature inside the compartment reaches 120 degrees Celsius, the tube opens at the hottest point and releases the agent to suppress the fire.
This design eliminates the need for manual intervention or connection to the vehicle’s electrical grid. The system remains ready at all times, whether the vehicle is driving, parked, or charging. Because it uses a heat-activated mechanism, it is not subject to the same failure modes as electronic systems, such as battery drain or sensor malfunctions. The agent used leaves no residue, protecting sensitive electronics from secondary damage.
Limitations of the protection scope
It is important to understand what the system does not do. According to GN auto tech/ev: electric vehicle reports, the device is not installed inside the sealed high-voltage traction battery. It is not designed to extinguish thermal runaway events that occur within the main battery pack itself. Instead, it serves as a first line of defense for the auxiliary systems, such as the 12-volt battery, wiring, and control modules.
The primary goal is to stop a fire originating in the front compartment from spreading to the high-voltage battery. By suppressing the initial source, the system helps limit heat transfer and reduces the risk of a total vehicle fire. This distinction is crucial for consumers, as it clarifies that the system protects the surrounding electronics rather than the main energy storage unit.
Service life and maintenance needs
The system has a rated service life of five years. After this period, it must be replaced to ensure continued protection. Because the device is passive and contains no moving parts or electronics, maintenance is straightforward. Owners do not need to monitor battery levels or check sensor status. The trade-off is that the protection is finite and requires periodic replacement to remain effective.
For Singapore drivers, the availability of this system through Tuffi provides an additional layer of safety for their electric vehicles. While it does not eliminate all fire risks, it addresses a specific vulnerability in the front of the vehicle. The combination of passive reliability and targeted protection offers a practical solution for mitigating electrical fire hazards in the evolving electric vehicle landscape.
