Nio ES9 Hits 30,000 Deliveries in Under Four Months

Nio's flagship electric SUV is approaching a major sales milestone, with the ES9 and ES8 now driving over 80% of the brand's total monthly sales.
Key points
- Nio is expected to deliver its 30,000th ES9 SUV within days of starting deliveries in May.
- The ES9 and ES8 accounted for 82.55% of Nio's main brand deliveries in August.
- The ES9 starts at 498,000 yuan with a battery rental option available for 390,000 yuan.
Nio is on track to deliver its 30,000th ES9 flagship SUV within days, a pace that marks a rapid start for its most expensive model. The company began delivering the vehicle in late May, meaning it has reached this threshold in less than four months. This speed highlights a strong initial reception for a vehicle positioned at the top of the brand's hierarchy.
The milestone is significant because the ES9 is not a volume seller; it is a premium product with a starting price of roughly $73,790 including the battery. Achieving this number quickly suggests that demand for large, high-end electric SUVs in China is robust enough to support Nio's premium ambitions, even in a competitive market.
Large SUVs drive brand sales
According to data compiled by CnEVPost, the ES9 and its sibling, the ES8, accounted for more than 80% of Nio's main brand deliveries in August. Specifically, these two models delivered 17,480 vehicles combined, representing 82.55% of the total. This concentration indicates that Nio's business is heavily reliant on large, multi-row electric vehicles rather than smaller or mid-size models.
The ES9 contributed 6,479 units to this total in August, a slight increase from July. By the end of August, cumulative deliveries had reached 24,497. Reaching the 30,000 mark implies that the model has added over 5,500 units since the start of September, maintaining a steady monthly rhythm.
Premium pricing and features
The ES9 is positioned above the ES8 and carries a substantial price tag. The entry-level configuration costs 498,000 yuan, which includes the battery pack. For buyers who prefer a lower upfront cost, Nio offers a battery-as-a-service rental plan that reduces the starting price to 390,000 yuan. This structure allows customers to access the vehicle with less initial capital, though it introduces a recurring monthly cost.
Under the hood, the vehicle utilizes a 900-volt high-voltage architecture and supports rapid battery swapping, a key differentiator for Nio. Higher-end trims, such as the Executive Signature and Horizon editions, include dual assisted-driving chips and a fully active suspension system. Nio management noted that initial orders for these premium variants exceeded expectations, suggesting that buyers are willing to pay extra for advanced hardware.
Expansion into new markets
Nio is also expanding the geographic reach of the ES9. Deliveries began in Macau on September 2, coinciding with the opening of the company's first Nio House in the region. This move signals an intent to capture demand in nearby high-income markets beyond mainland China. The rapid accumulation of deliveries suggests that the brand's premium positioning is resonating with consumers in these new areas.
