BYD has revealed a new ultra-luxury electric sedan under its Yangwang brand. The vehicle features rear-hinged coach doors and aims to compete with top-tier luxury rivals. It may also be BYD's first car to use solid-state batteries.
The car is currently in testing in China and internally named "HU." It represents the culmination of three years of development. BYD positions this model as an ultra-luxury executive sedan for the elite market.
Design borrows from luxury giants
Recent images show a design nearly identical to the Rolls-Royce Phantom. This includes rear-hinged coach doors, a first for BYD. The brand uses Yangwang to showcase its most advanced technologies.
The sedan is expected to feature the quad-motor e4 platform. This system delivers over 1,000 horsepower. It also supports 5-minute Flash Charging, a technology previously seen in other BYD models.
Solid-state battery timeline confirmed
BYD executive Stella Li confirmed the company is leading in solid-state battery tech. She stated the first vehicle with this battery will debut in 2027. This technology promises faster charging and higher energy density.
BYD's battery unit, FinDreams, plans limited sulfide-based production in 2027. Mass production is targeted for 2030. The new sedan may offer these batteries on higher-priced variants, while standard models keep Blade LFP batteries.
High price point expected
Reports estimate the Yangwang sedan will cost over 2 million yuan. That is nearly $300,000. This is significantly higher than the current Yangwang U7, which starts at 658,000 yuan.
Electrek notes that BYD has not announced official prices yet. The high cost reflects the premium positioning and advanced technology. Buyers should expect a substantial price premium over standard electric sedans.
