Kakao Navi Adds Real-Time CCTV Views for Traffic Jams

Kakao Navi has introduced a new feature that allows drivers to view live camera footage of traffic bottlenecks in real time. Announced ahead of the Chuseok holiday, this update aims to make navigation more transparent by showing users exactly why a detour is suggested, rather than just providing the route itself.

According to reports from chosun.com, the service now displays the specific reason behind optimal route recommendations, such as accidents or severe congestion. When a driver enters a crowded area, they can tap an on-screen prompt to watch live CCTV feeds of the affected section, offering a clearer picture of the conditions ahead.

Transparency replaces opaque routing

Previously, the app simply calculated the fastest path without explaining the underlying causes for specific detours. The new system provides context, allowing users to verify the situation visually. This shift addresses a common frustration among drivers who often wonder if a suggested detour is actually necessary or if the algorithm is being overly conservative.

However, this feature relies entirely on the availability of public or partner surveillance cameras in the specific area. In rural regions or less monitored zones, users may still receive route suggestions without the visual confirmation option, limiting the utility of the update to well-observed highways and urban centers.

Driving scores drive insurance discounts

Kakao is also leveraging navigation data to offer financial incentives. Drivers who have used the app for over 500 kilometers in the past six months can now qualify for car insurance discounts. The system reviews records for behaviors like speeding, rapid acceleration, and sudden braking to determine eligibility.

The company plans to expand these usage-based insurance partnerships from two providers to four, including KB General Insurance and Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance. This expansion aims to make the discount program more accessible, though it requires users to maintain consistent data collection to meet insurer criteria.

Electric vehicle rental options expand

In parallel, KakaoT Rent-a-Car has broadened its electric vehicle inventory to approximately 50 models. By partnering with over 500 small-to-medium rental businesses, the platform now includes brands such as Tesla, Polestar, and BYD. This move seeks to make electric rentals more widely available across the country.

Users can compare various models, rental fees, and insurance terms directly within the app. A promotional event running until October 11 offers discounted three-day rentals for popular models like the Sonata and K5. While this increases choice, the trade-off is that availability depends on the local partner fleet, which may vary significantly by region.
