Volkswagen ID.3 GTI Brings Classic Hot Hatch Feel to Electric Era
Volkswagen has unveiled the ID.3 GTI, an electric hot hatch that combines 326 horsepower with a 601 km range, marking the brand's entry into the electric performance segment for 2027.
Volkswagen is bringing its iconic GTI formula into the electric age with the new ID.3 GTI, revealed ahead of a planned market launch in 2027. The vehicle marks the 50th anniversary of the GTI name and becomes the most powerful production model in the brand's history, blending high performance with the practicality of a compact electric car.
The car produces 240 kW (326 PS) and 545 Nm of torque from a rear-mounted electric motor, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.6 seconds. Unlike traditional internal-combustion GTIs, this model delivers maximum torque instantly, a characteristic that changes how the car responds during acceleration and cornering.
Power and efficiency balance in new design
According to GN auto tech/ev: electric vehicle, the ID.3 GTI pairs its performance with a 79-kWh battery that offers a claimed range of up to 601 km. This range allows the car to function as both a spirited driver’s tool and a practical commuter, supporting DC fast charging at up to 183 kW.
Under suitable conditions, the battery can charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 29 minutes. This efficiency ensures that the electric powertrain does not sacrifice everyday usability for speed, placing the ID.3 GTI in a unique position among electric hatchbacks.
Classic styling cues return in electric form
Volkswagen has retained key visual elements that define the GTI brand, including a red stripe inspired by the original 1976 Golf GTI. The front features IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights connected by a transparent light strip, while the bumper includes a high-gloss black honeycomb grille and red accents.
The side profile showcases 20-inch Wörthersee alloy wheels, paying homage to a famous GTI gathering in Austria. Notably, the roof and spoiler are finished in body color rather than black, giving the car a more streamlined appearance compared to previous electric models.
Interior revives tartan patterns and sport modes
Inside, the cabin follows a traditional black-and-red theme with a thin stripe across the dashboard and a red marking on the sport steering wheel. The seats feature a modern interpretation of the classic tartan pattern, providing a tactile link to the original GTI interior.
An illuminated GTI button on the steering wheel activates a dedicated driving profile that adjusts the motor, steering, and chassis for maximum sportiness. This mode also enables Launch Control, ensuring the car remains responsive and engaging for enthusiasts who value driving dynamics.
