Sonos is redefining its role in the smart home by integrating artificial intelligence into its core operating system, aiming to move beyond simple command-based control.
Sonos has announced Sonos 27, a significant software update that positions the company as a provider of an intelligent audio operating system rather than just a manufacturer of networked speakers. This shift is designed to allow the system to understand user intent and adapt dynamically to how music is consumed within a home.
The core of this strategy involves opening the platform to external AI assistants, allowing users to control music through natural conversation rather than rigid app navigation or pre-set voice commands. This approach aims to make the listening experience more seamless and personalized, integrating audio control into broader smart home workflows.
Open protocols enable third-party AI integration
The update introduces Sonos 27mcp, which utilizes the Model Context Protocol to connect with external AI platforms like ChatGPT and Claude. Users can now ask an AI to find specific artists, adjust volumes, or reorganize speaker groups as part of a natural dialogue, reducing the need to open the dedicated Sonos app.
This openness represents a strategic move to embed Sonos systems into the emerging model of smart homes where AI agents manage various household tools. By becoming a compatible backend for third-party AI, Sonos ensures its products remain relevant in a landscape increasingly driven by conversational interfaces.
Dedicated assistant focuses on musical context
Later this autumn, Sonos will launch Sonos 27voice, a dedicated AI assistant built specifically for music control. Unlike general-purpose assistants, this tool is designed to understand nuance, mood, and context. For example, a user might describe a feeling or a memory of a song rather than reciting a specific title, and the system will attempt to interpret that intent to select appropriate music.

Hardware updates enhance ecosystem flexibility
Alongside the software changes, Sonos is releasing the Ace Ultra headphones, which integrate more deeply into the home audio ecosystem. A feature called Headphone Linking allows the headphones to connect securely to the Sonos system over Wi-Fi. This enables users to pause music on a speaker and continue listening privately on their headphones, or vice versa, effectively allowing the audio session to follow the user around the house.
However, this integration comes with a trade-off. The system relies heavily on a stable Wi-Fi connection for the seamless handoff between devices.
