Exegin Technologies has secured early certification for Suzi, a new sub-GHz feature set that allows Zigbee devices to communicate over longer distances and through solid obstacles.

Exegin Technologies has become one of the first two software vendors globally to achieve certification for Suzi, a new sub-GHz feature set introduced by the Connectivity Standards Alliance alongside Zigbee 4.0. This update enables devices to operate in the 868MHz band in Europe and the 915MHz band in North America, moving beyond the traditional 2.4GHz spectrum.

The primary benefit of this shift is improved signal propagation. Lower frequency waves generally travel further and penetrate physical barriers more effectively than higher frequency signals. This makes the technology particularly suitable for applications where 2.4GHz connectivity often fails, such as utility networks, agricultural monitoring, and industrial sites with dense structural elements.

Silicon independence drives broader hardware adoption

A key differentiator for Exegin is its approach to software integration. As a developer of mesh networking software, the company provides a silicon-independent solution. This means manufacturers are not locked into using a specific chip vendor. Instead, they can implement the Suzi standard across various combinations of sub-GHz radios and processors, offering greater flexibility in product design.

This flexibility is crucial for the broader ecosystem. By decoupling the protocol software from specific hardware, the standard becomes more accessible to a wider range of device manufacturers. This could accelerate the availability of compatible silicon and modules, which is currently a bottleneck for the wider adoption of sub-GHz Zigbee technologies.

Dual-band devices bridge old and new networks

To ease the transition for existing infrastructure, Exegin highlights the potential of dual-band devices. These products combine both 2.4GHz and sub-GHz radios, allowing them to communicate with legacy Zigbee equipment while utilizing the lower-frequency band for tasks requiring greater range or better penetration. This hybrid approach ensures backward compatibility without sacrificing the benefits of the new standard.

The company, which has deployed mesh networking software in over 300 million IoT devices, sees this as a strategic step for smart metering and smart city applications. However, the real-world impact of this certification depends on how quickly other manufacturers begin integrating sub-GHz capabilities into their end-user products.

Challenges remain for widespread industrial deployment

While the technology offers clear advantages in range and obstacle resistance, it is not a universal solution. The sub-GHz bands are shared with other technologies, which can lead to congestion in dense urban areas. Furthermore, the lower frequency does not support high-data-rate applications, meaning it is best suited for control and monitoring rather than video streaming or large data transfers.

Yet, wider adoption will hinge on the availability of cost-effective compatible hardware.
