Two US states are deploying millions in federal and state funds to build charging stations and test hydrogen trucks, aiming to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

State governments in the United States are accelerating the rollout of electric and hydrogen vehicle infrastructure. North Carolina has allocated $14.4 million to install new charging stations along major highways, while Michigan has distributed $1.5 million to support ten distinct mobility projects. These investments represent a significant step toward diversifying the country's transportation energy mix, moving beyond gasoline and diesel.

The funding is part of a broader federal effort to modernize the nation's roads. In North Carolina, this money comes from the National Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Program. It marks the second round of grants for the state, which has received a total of $109 million for this purpose. The goal is to create a reliable network of charging points that can handle the growing number of electric cars on the road.

Charging stations expand across corridors

According to reporting by GN technics/ev, the North Carolina Department of Transportation has awarded contracts to eight businesses. These firms will build and operate 14 new charging sites. This infrastructure is crucial for long-distance travel, as it reduces the anxiety of running out of power in remote areas. The state expects the entire network to be completed within three years, providing a steady stream of reliable energy for drivers.

The trade-off for this rapid expansion is the logistical complexity of coordinating multiple contractors. Each site requires distinct power connections and maintenance plans. However, the state government argues that the benefits of a unified network outweigh the short-term administrative challenges. This approach ensures that drivers can find consistent service levels regardless of where they travel within the state.

Michigan funds hydrogen and battery tech

In Michigan, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced grants for projects that focus on both hydrogen fuel cells and advanced battery charging. The state’s Mobility Funding Platform supports companies that bring new technologies to market. This includes Detroit Hydrogen Exchange, which received $250,000 to test a hydrogen-powered refuse truck. The vehicle will operate in real municipal conditions to prove its reliability for heavy-duty work.

Another recipient, Neology, will use its grant to build a hydrogen production and refueling site in Detroit. This facility aims to support medium and heavy-duty vehicles that may not be suitable for battery electric power due to weight or range requirements. By investing in hydrogen, Michigan is hedging its bets on a single technology, recognizing that different vehicle types may require different energy sources.

Solving grid constraints for fast charging

Not all projects focus on hydrogen. OpenRoad Technologies received a $135,000 grant to validate its battery-buffered charging solutions. This technology addresses a common problem: many locations lack the electrical grid capacity to support fast charging stations. By using local battery storage, these stations can deliver high power without overloading the local grid. This is a critical innovation for urban areas where infrastructure upgrades are slow or costly.

These state-level initiatives highlight a fragmented but active approach to clean mobility. While the federal government provides the baseline funding, states like North Carolina and Michigan are determining how to best deploy it. The result is a patchwork of innovations, from highway chargers to hydrogen trucks, each addressing specific local needs and challenges.
