Microsoft will enable Memory Integrity by default next year, sparking fears of lost performance. New benchmarks suggest the real-world cost is far lower than online rumors indicate.

Starting in October 2026, Windows quality updates will automatically enable Memory Integrity on eligible devices. This security feature strengthens protection against certain types of malware, but it has triggered widespread concern among gamers. Many online guides claim this change will significantly reduce frame rates, leading to a narrative that performance will drop by double digits.

However, independent testing contradicts this panic. According to XDA Developers, benchmarks conducted on modern hardware show that the performance penalty is negligible in most scenarios. While the setting does introduce a small overhead, the impact on average frame rates and consistency is minor, challenging the idea that security and gaming performance are mutually exclusive.

Synthetic Tests Show Negligible CPU Impact

To isolate the processor's behavior, testers used 3DMark’s CPU Profile benchmark. This test removes graphical variables, ensuring any difference is purely due to the CPU. On a Ryzen 5 7600X, the gap between Memory Integrity being on and off was less than half a percent for most thread counts. One outlier showed a 2.3% difference, but even that falls within normal run-to-run variance.

Real-World Gaming Results Remain Stable

Counter-Strike 2 was used to test actual gameplay conditions, as it stresses the CPU heavily. At 1080p resolution, the average frame rate dropped by only 1.7% when Memory Integrity was enabled. More importantly, the frame time consistency, measured by 1% lows, showed no significant degradation. The slight variations observed are consistent with normal system fluctuation rather than a specific penalty from the security feature.

Security Defaults Do Not Limit Control

Microsoft has clarified that users retain full control over this setting. Devices where the feature was previously disabled will not have it forced on by updates. This means gamers who prioritize raw performance can keep the setting off, while others can accept the minimal trade-off for enhanced security. The data suggests the default change is a reasonable balance, not a hidden performance tax.
