Choosing between the two dominant smartwatches in the Wear OS ecosystem has become a matter of personal preference rather than raw capability. To find a definitive answer, I wore the Pixel Watch 5 and the Galaxy Watch 9 simultaneously for one week. This approach eliminated the guesswork involved in switching devices, allowing for a direct comparison of daily experience, comfort, and performance metrics without the interference of different usage patterns.
The results were not a clear victory for either device. The Pixel Watch 5 demonstrated superior battery longevity, maintaining high charge levels throughout the day. In contrast, the Galaxy Watch 9 impressed with its significantly thinner design, offering a more traditional watch-like feel. Design preferences shift with thickness

The Galaxy Watch 9, despite running the same software, saw its battery drop below 50 percent on occasion.
Battery capacity plays a role, as the larger Pixel Watch 5 model houses a bigger cell. However, even the smaller variant of the Pixel Watch 5 is rated to last as long as the standard Galaxy Watch 9. The difference in real-world consistency is striking. The Pixel Watch 5 provided a stable and predictable drain, while the Galaxy Watch 9 showed more variability. For users who dislike charging their device every night, the Pixel Watch 5 offers a distinct advantage in endurance.
Health tracking remains comparable
In terms of health and fitness monitoring, the two devices perform similarly. During the test week, activity levels were moderate, making it difficult to isolate significant differences in sensor accuracy. Both watches recorded heart rate, sleep, and step counts with comparable reliability. There were no major discrepancies in the data presented on the screens or in the companion apps.
