Meta's Project Phoenix Headset Design Surfaces Ahead of Connect

Images found in a firmware update suggest Meta is developing a lightweight mixed-reality display that sits between smart glasses and full VR headsets.
Meta may have inadvertently revealed the design of its next-generation headset, codenamed Project Phoenix, just weeks before its major product announcement event. UploadVR reported that images embedded in a recent HorizonOS firmware package show a device that looks significantly slimmer than the company's current virtual reality offerings. This leak provides a rare glimpse into the hardware Meta plans to unveil on September 23rd, potentially shifting the focus away from bulky headsets toward a more wearable form factor.
The leaked visuals depict a glasses-style frame with integrated lenses, positioning the device in a middle ground between Ray-Ban smart glasses and full-featured VR headsets like the Quest 3. While it lacks the bulk of traditional VR gear, it is more substantial than simple audio or AI glasses. This suggests Meta is targeting a specific niche for mixed reality experiences that users can wear for longer periods without the discomfort associated with heavier equipment. The design aims to make immersive technology more accessible for daily use, a significant strategic shift for the company.
Design features reveal external processing units
A key detail in the leaked images is a wire extending from the temple arm of the glasses. This connection likely links to an external battery or compute puck, a common engineering compromise to keep the frame light.
