Nigeria's IGP Orders Security Readiness for 2027 Elections

Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has instructed senior commanders to prioritize preparedness for the 2027 general elections. Speaking at a recent conference in Imo State, Disu emphasized that the security architecture for the upcoming vote must be rooted in professionalism, intelligence, and strict accountability.

According to The Guardian Nigeria News, the directive was issued during the sixth Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers. The event served as a platform to develop a strategic roadmap for managing security, ensuring that the police force is positioned well ahead of election day to protect voters, electoral officials, and the integrity of the process.

Operational Priorities for the Electoral Cycle

Disu outlined a comprehensive mandate covering the entire electoral timeline, from early intelligence gathering to rapid response capabilities. He directed Commissioners of Police to identify potential flashpoints and strengthen early-warning systems. Additionally, officers are being tasked with training in crowd management and human-rights-compliant policing to maintain order while respecting civil liberties.

The Inspector-General also warned political actors and their supporters against the recruitment of thugs, vote-buying, and the movement of arms. He stated that the force will collaborate with the Independent National Electoral Commission, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission to investigate electoral offenses and ensure suspects face prosecution.

Recent Enforcement Statistics Cited

To contextualize the security environment, Disu disclosed significant enforcement results since assuming office in February 2026. The force reports the arrest of 251 terrorists and suspected bandits, 343 murder suspects, and 566 armed robbery suspects. These figures underscore the ongoing challenges posed by kidnapping, terrorism, and communal violence that the police aim to mitigate during the election period.

Furthermore, authorities have rescued 1,066 kidnapping victims and recovered 947 firearms along with more than 22,000 rounds of ammunition. These statistics highlight the scale of the internal security threats that the police must manage while simultaneously preparing for the logistical complexities of a nationwide election.
