Vietnam has committed to broadening its diplomatic and economic partnership with Nigeria, marking the 50th anniversary of formal ties between the two nations. The pledge was announced during a reception in Abuja, where officials emphasized the strategic importance of this milestone for both countries.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the Vietnamese government aims to deepen cooperation in agriculture, digital transformation, and trade. Le Hoang, the Vietnamese ambassador to Nigeria, stated that the anniversary offers a chance to reflect on the longstanding partnership and identify new avenues for collaboration despite the geographical distance.
Five Areas of Strategic Cooperation
The ambassador identified four primary sectors for expanded engagement. Agriculture and food security lead the list, with Vietnam offering expertise in high-tech farming, rice production, and aquaculture. The second focus is digital transformation, encompassing telecommunications infrastructure, e-commerce, and financial technology.
Trade and investment form the third pillar, with a specific invitation for Nigerian businesses to explore opportunities in the Vietnamese market. The fourth area involves people-to-people exchanges, particularly in education, tourism, sports, and the arts. Hoang noted that stronger cultural interaction would foster mutual understanding and provide a broader foundation for bilateral relations.
Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Partnership
Wakil Babagana, Chief of Party to the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responded by congratulating Vietnam on its national day. He underscored the achievements of both countries over the past five decades, describing the golden jubilee as a significant milestone. Babagana reaffirmed Nigeria’s willingness to broaden the relationship beyond diplomatic ties to include stronger economic and technological partnerships.
Looking Ahead to a New Phase
The next phase of the relationship is intended to build on the foundation established since 1976 while creating new opportunities for governments, businesses, and citizens. The event was attended by diplomats, government officials, and representatives of international organizations, highlighting the diplomatic weight of the occasion.
