Ukraine Reports over 1.5 Million Russian Troop Losses
The Ukrainian General Staff has updated its casualty estimates, revealing a significant daily increase in reported Russian losses as the conflict enters its third year.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on September 19 that Russian military losses have reached approximately 1,516,430 personnel since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. This cumulative figure includes an estimated 1,520 casualties attributed to Russian forces over the preceding 24 hours, according to the official daily briefing. The update continues a long-standing pattern of daily reporting that tracks the scale of attrition on the front lines.
In addition to human casualties, the report details extensive material losses. Ukraine claims that Russia has lost over 12,000 tanks, 25,000 armored combat vehicles, and more than 150,000 vehicles and fuel tanks. The inventory of lost equipment also includes 50,000 artillery systems, 2,100 multiple launch rocket systems, and 1,600 air defense systems. Aviation losses are reported at 442 aircraft and 356 helicopters, while naval assets lost include 35 ships and boats and two submarines.

According to CSIS, the ratio of losses is roughly between 2:1 and 2.5:1 in favor of Ukrainian forces.
A January 2026 report from CSIS suggests that Ukraine has likely suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 through December 2025. Within this range, an estimated 100,000 to 140,000 individuals are believed to have been killed in action. These figures underscore the severe human cost borne by both sides, even as the disparity in total losses remains a key metric in analyzing the war’s trajectory.
