NATO Tests Uncrewed Naval Tech and Stealth Lighting in Lisbon

Maritime special operations forces in Lisbon are evaluating uncrewed vessels, wireless charging, and bioluminescent lights to reduce detection risks during covert missions.
NATO maritime special operations forces have begun testing a suite of emerging technologies designed to enhance long-range strike capabilities and reduce detectability at sea. The exercises, known as Bold Machina 26, took place at a naval base in Lisbon and brought together special forces personnel with industry developers to evaluate systems for intelligence, surveillance, and underwater operations.
According to GN geopolitics/nato, the program serves as a direct feedback loop between the military and private sector innovators. By placing equipment in front of operators, the initiative aims to accelerate the integration of tools that allow special forces to conduct missions with less human intervention and a lower acoustic and thermal signature.
Uncrewed Vessels Enhance Maritime Reach
Among the primary systems demonstrated was the Vanta, a six-meter uncrewed surface vessel developed by STARK. The vessel is capable of reaching speeds up to 46 knots and can carry loitering munitions capable of striking targets up to 80 kilometers away. Operators view these platforms as critical for approaching harbors and supporting diving operations without risking crewed assets.
Another platform on display was the K3 Scout from UK-based Kraken Technology Group. The company noted that the exercise provided a valuable opportunity to receive immediate feedback on payload requirements and operational preferences. The K3 Scout has already undergone trials with British forces, including a test where it was dropped from an RAF A400M aircraft during Project Beehive.
Biological Lighting Reduces Operational Signature
Canadian biotechnology firm Luxbio demonstrated an underwater light source derived from firefly protein. By embedding the genetic code into microbes, the company produces a light that generates no noise and emits no detectable heat. This characteristic could allow special forces to illuminate areas without revealing their position through conventional thermal or acoustic emissions.
Wireless Power Extends Submerged Duration
Norwegian company Unplugged showcased technology that enables underwater systems to exchange power and data without physical cables. According to NATO’s Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic, the system can operate at depths of up to 3,000 meters. This capability allows autonomous vehicles to recharge while remaining submerged, potentially extending their operational endurance and reducing the need for surfacing.
The integration of these technologies reflects a broader shift toward autonomous and biologically inspired solutions in maritime defense. As NATO continues to test these systems, the focus remains on how such tools can be deployed effectively in contested environments while maintaining operational security.
