UAE Urges Global Focus on Tolerance and Hate Speech Prevention

The United Arab Emirates has urged the international community to adopt a comprehensive approach to countering extremism and hate speech, emphasizing the need to empower diverse societal groups in this effort. According to a statement released by mofa.gov.ae, Minister of State Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar stressed that promoting tolerance and peaceful coexistence requires active participation from religious leaders, women, youth, civil society, and technology companies.

This call was made during the Global Conference on Promoting Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue and Tolerance in Countering Hate Speech, hosted by the Kingdom of Morocco. The event took place in New York ahead of the high-level United Nations General Assembly, in cooperation with the UN Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect, as well as the UN Alliance of Civilizations.

National Framework for Diversity

Al Marar highlighted the UAE’s domestic model as a reference point for international cooperation, noting that the country is home to over 200 nationalities living in an environment that respects cultural diversity. The UAE’s efforts are framed within its 'Tolerance, Peace and Security' agenda, which seeks to foster dignity, employment, and stability for all residents.

Key initiatives cited include the Document on Human Fraternity and the establishment of the Abrahamic Family House. Additionally, the UAE played a central role in drafting UN Security Council Resolution 2686 on Tolerance, Peace and Security, which was adopted unanimously in 2023. These actions are presented as concrete steps toward fostering interreligious and intercultural dialogue.

Reforming United Nations Priorities

As the United Nations undergoes institutional reforms and prepares to select a new Secretary-General, the UAE has argued that combating hate speech must be elevated to a core priority for the organization. Al Marar stated that these efforts should be integrated into the responsibilities of special political missions, peacekeeping operations, and the work of UN representatives globally.

The minister emphasized that tolerance should serve as a foundational element of crisis prevention and organizational leadership. By placing these values at the heart of UN work, the UAE aims to ensure that diplomatic efforts are aligned with the goal of creating a secure and stable international environment.
