Adani Power Limited has commenced construction of a 3,200 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Dhubri, Assam. The project, located at Chapar, involves an investment of approximately 48,000 crore rupees and is designed to add significant generation capacity to the state’s grid.
The facility will consist of four 800 MW units utilizing ultra-supercritical technology. This setup aims to provide reliable electricity for residential, commercial, and industrial sectors while incorporating modern environmental safeguards for efficient operation.
Phased commissioning targets 2030
According to company disclosures via adani.com, the plant is scheduled for phased commissioning starting in December 2030. This timeline aligns with the broader strategy to expand generation capabilities in lower Assam to meet growing energy demands.
The project is part of a larger 63,000 crore rupee investment in power infrastructure within the state. This includes approximately 15,000 crore rupees allocated for two pumped storage plants with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW, managed by Adani Green Energy Limited.
Employment and local supply chain impact
During the construction phase, the project is expected to generate up to 20,000 jobs. Once operational, it will support approximately 5,000 permanent positions. The initiative also aims to integrate local contractors, suppliers, and transport operators into the supply chain ecosystem.
Broader sectoral investment commitments
Beyond the thermal plant, the Adani Group has committed over 80,000 crore rupees to various sectors in Assam, including aviation and cement. These investments are intended to drive infrastructure development and create economic opportunities over the next three to four years.
Adani Energy Solutions is also involved in implementing smart metering projects to modernize the state’s power distribution infrastructure. This multi-sector approach seeks to strengthen the overall energy reliability and economic foundation of the region.
