Micron shares are up 256% year-to-date, with options pricing a 10.3% move around the Sept 30 report. Wall Street expects EPS of $31.27 and revenue of $50.59 billion.

Key points

  • Micron stock implies a 10.3% move on earnings, with straddle costs at $104.45 near the $1,015 strike.
  • Analysts project fiscal Q4 revenue of $50.59 billion and EPS of $31.27, driven by AI demand.
  • RBC Capital expects HBM prices to rise 80-100% in 2027 due to constrained supply and GenAI demand.

Micron Technology (MU) enters its fiscal fourth-quarter report on September 30 with market expectations elevated to historic levels. Options traders are pricing in a substantial move, with contracts implying a 10.3% swing in either direction. This volatility premium reflects the stock’s 256% year-to-date surge, driven by artificial intelligence infrastructure spending and tight supplies in the high-bandwidth memory sector.

The options market values the potential move using the $1,015 strike, near the current share price. A call option priced at $53 and a put at $51.45 create a combined straddle cost of $104.45. This figure equates to approximately 10.28% of the underlying equity value, indicating that investors anticipate significant price action regardless of the direction of the earnings surprise.

Record Revenue and Earnings Projections

Wall Street consensus expects Micron to deliver adjusted earnings of $31.27 per share for the quarter, a sharp increase from $3.03 in the same period last year. Revenue is projected to climb more than 345% to $50.59 billion. These figures underscore the explosive demand for DRAM and HBM products, which have become critical components in AI data center builds.

Despite these massive growth figures, beating estimates may not be sufficient to drive further gains. Micron has exceeded earnings and revenue expectations in each of its past eight quarters. However, the stock fell 3.8% following fiscal Q2 2026 results and 2.8% after fiscal Q4 2025. This pattern suggests that investors are increasingly focused on forward-looking guidance rather than the immediate headline numbers.

Supply Constraints Drive 2027 Outlook

RBC Capital’s Srini Pajjuri maintains a Buy rating with a $1,500 price target, citing sustained GenAI demand and constrained supply. He argues that these factors could extend the memory upcycle through 2027. Pajjuri expects high-bandwidth memory demand to grow by more than 50%, with potential price increases of 80% to 100% in 2027.

The market’s focus has shifted from current quarter performance to the durability of the pricing cycle. Investors are watching for signals on DRAM pricing, gross-margin expansion, and the longevity of HBM shortages. If management confirms that supply constraints will persist into 2027, it could support continued valuation expansion despite the significant year-to-date rally.

Expectations Test Dominates Investor Focus

According to TradingView, the September 30 report has become a test of expectations rather than just earnings delivery. The double-digit volatility priced into options means that even strong results could lead to stock declines if guidance implies softer pricing or easing supply conditions. Conversely, evidence of persistent HBM shortages could validate the current premium and support further upside.
