Autodesk is introducing a new standalone AI assistant designed to coordinate complex workflows across different software applications, aiming to reduce the cognitive load on project managers and non-designers in the construction industry.

Autodesk is expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities beyond individual design tools to create a unified system that manages entire project workflows. According to reporting from GN technics/ai (en-US), the company is developing a standalone assistant planned for release in 2027. This tool is designed to understand the context of a project rather than just responding to isolated queries, allowing it to coordinate tasks across multiple platforms used in architecture and engineering.

The core of this strategy is the move toward what the company calls an agent-first approach. Instead of users manually selecting specific software features, the AI acts as an orchestration layer. It identifies potential issues before they are asked about, pulls data from various sources, and determines which specialized tool is needed to solve a problem. This aims to free up professionals from the burden of navigating complex software interfaces, allowing them to focus on advancing the project itself.

Expanding access beyond core design tools

Traditionally, Autodesk’s AI features have been embedded within specific applications like Revit or AutoCAD. However, the company notes that for every person using these core design tools, there are approximately ten others involved in the project, such as project managers and coordinators, who rarely open the design software itself. The new standalone assistant targets this larger group, providing them access to the underlying data and AI engines without requiring them to learn complex design applications. This broadens the utility of the platform to those managing schedules, costs, and logistics.

The system is built to handle the specific constraints of real-world projects, including geometry, engineering intent, and historical data. By understanding the relationships between different parts of a project, the assistant can predict how a change in one area impacts fabrication, costs, or construction sequencing. This contextual awareness allows the AI to route tasks to the appropriate capabilities, ensuring that the right information is available to the right person at the right time.

Balancing flexibility with predictable workflows

A common criticism of AI in professional settings is its inconsistency, where similar prompts can yield different results. To address this, Autodesk is introducing a feature called Assistant Builder. This tool allows users to create templated workflows that combine the flexibility of AI with the predictability needed for professional work. Users describe their desired outcome, and the system generates a multi-step workflow that can be saved and reused, ensuring that critical processes remain stable and reliable.

Under the hood, an AI orchestrator selects the best model for each specific task based on factors like accuracy, speed, security, and cost. This means the system can dynamically choose the most efficient way to complete a job without user intervention. The standalone assistant does not replace the AI features already inside individual design tools; rather, all components run on the same platform, creating a cohesive ecosystem where different AI agents work together to support the entire project lifecycle.
