Panelists agreed that the speed of this change is unprecedented, outpacing the ability of traditional institutions to adapt, thereby creating a vacuum that governments must now fill to prevent societal instability.

Corporate Hierarchies Face Structural Flattening

Glen Fogel, chief executive of Booking Holdings, illustrated the tangible impact of AI on human roles by citing the drastic reduction in human translators at his company. He noted that thousands of positions have vanished as algorithms took over translation tasks, leaving former employees without clear career paths. While his firm envisions AI agents that can dynamically organize and reorganize travel plans in real-time, the human cost of this efficiency is significant. Fogel expressed concern that the transition is happening too quickly for many individuals to retrain for new, AI-centric roles.

Ravi Kumar S, CEO of Cognizant, offered a different perspective, arguing that AI has the potential to shift power downward within organizations. Unlike previous technological disruptions that concentrated control at the top, he believes AI can empower everyday employees with greater capabilities and autonomy. However, he acknowledged that most companies have not yet implemented this decentralization. To bridge the gap between current practices and this ideal, he proposed temporary taxes on companies that use AI to replace human workers, using the revenue to support economic stability during the transition.

Global Competition and Regulatory Challenges

Despite the economic risks, both executives opposed recent calls to slow down advanced AI research. They argued that unilateral pauses by U.S. companies would be dangerous if competitors abroad continued to accelerate. Fogel compared the risk to nuclear proliferation, warning that if other nations, such as China, continue to develop similar technologies aggressively, the United States would face a significantly worse strategic position. This perspective prioritizes maintaining competitive advantage over managing the immediate social fallout, suggesting that slowing down is not a viable option in a global race.

The debate also highlighted the divergence between developed and developing nations. Doreen Bogdan-Martin, secretary general of the International Telecommunication Union, praised countries like Canada and Rwanda for investing in workforce upskilling. She pointed out that young people in the developing world are already using AI to drive innovation in agriculture and healthcare. However, she emphasized a critical gap: 2.2 billion people have never used the internet, and the majority have never interacted with generative AI. Without international effort to connect these populations, the benefits of AI will remain concentrated among a privileged few.

Balancing Innovation With Social Safety Nets

The consensus among panelists was that technology alone cannot solve the economic disruptions it creates. Fogel stated that his company is training every employee to be AI literate, preparing them for a future where their specific roles may no longer exist. This approach aims to ensure that if jobs are eliminated, workers have the skills to find alternative employment. However, he stressed that private sector efforts are insufficient without a corresponding role for government. Policymakers must design frameworks that manage the transition period to prevent societal disruption, ensuring that the gains from AI are not offset by mass unemployment and social fragmentation.

The stakes extend beyond individual careers to the stability of regional economies. If AI leads to the destruction of local industries without creating new ones in their place, the resulting economic void could be devastating. The discussion underscored that while AI offers powerful tools for efficiency and innovation, its deployment requires careful orchestration. Without deliberate policies that address access, training, and economic redistribution, the technology risks deepening existing inequalities and creating new forms of social exclusion.
