The goal is not to halt progress but to buy researchers an additional one to two years to build necessary safeguards. This proposal includes granting third-party evaluators permanent, employee-level access to company systems to verify safety adherence and assess model alignment during the training process. Similar calls for caution have been made by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and thousands of other tech employees, indicating a broad internal recognition of the risks involved.
Military Applications Raise Safety Questions
The debate over AI safety coincides with accelerated adoption of these technologies in high-stakes environments, particularly in defense. Foundation Future Industries, a startup backed by Eric Trump, recently secured a contract with the U.S. Defense Department to test humanoid battle robots. The company claims to have deployed approximately ten such units with the Air Force and in pilot programs in Ukraine, leasing them at a cost of roughly $100,000 per robot per year. These robots are designed to perform precise tasks, such as navigating buildings to reach specific targets, which raises significant questions about the level of control and oversight required for autonomous systems in combat scenarios.
The Cost of Rapid Progress
The core trade-off facing the industry is between rapid capability expansion and the time required to understand and constrain those capabilities.
