A new partnership aims to solve the cooling and power challenges of AI data centers across the Middle East, Turkey, and Africa.
Submer and Edgecore Networks have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on data center infrastructure across the Middle East, Turkey, and Africa. The move addresses the growing complexity of supporting artificial intelligence workloads in the region, where traditional siloed infrastructure designs are struggling to keep pace with demand.
The partnership combines Submer’s expertise in physical facility design, power, and thermal management with Edgecore’s open networking hardware. By integrating these layers early in the planning process, the companies aim to provide a more cohesive solution for customers deploying high-density GPU clusters.
Integrating physical and network layers
Traditionally, data centers are built by treating power, cooling, and networking as separate projects. However, as AI adoption accelerates, the interdependence of these systems becomes critical. High-performance computing requires precise synchronization between heat dissipation and data transmission. According to the companies, this fragmentation makes scaling difficult and inefficient.
Submer provides the advisory, design, and build services for the physical infrastructure, including advanced thermal systems. Edgecore contributes its portfolio of open, high-performance switches and optical networking components. Together, they propose a unified approach where the facility, power, and network are engineered to work together from the outset, rather than being bolted on sequentially.
Meeting rising power and heat demands
The primary driver for this collaboration is the physical strain that AI workloads place on data centers. GPU-intensive tasks generate significantly higher heat and require more electricity per rack than traditional server loads. This intensity creates a bottleneck for standard cooling systems and power distribution networks.
In the META region, these technical challenges are compounded by sovereign AI initiatives. Governments and enterprises increasingly require local, resilient infrastructure that can support large-scale models without relying on external cloud providers. The partnership targets this specific need by focusing on scalable, locally deployable solutions that can handle the thermal and bandwidth requirements of modern AI.
Regional market expansion and trade-offs
The agreement includes joint solution development and go-to-market initiatives across the Middle East, Turkey, and Africa. Customers in these markets will have access to integrated architectures that align networking, power, and cooling requirements during the initial planning stages. This is intended to simplify deployment and reduce operational complexity.
However, this approach requires a significant upfront commitment to integrated design.
