The assumption that data stored in the cloud is inherently safe from physical harm has been shattered in the Middle East. Following a series of Iranian drone strikes on data centers in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, Amazon Web Services has confirmed that customer data in these regions has been permanently lost. Bahrain suffered the most severe damage, with Amazon unable to restore access to any of its three availability zones in the region. The cloud provider stated that after a thorough assessment, it could not recover the resources and data hosted exclusively in these areas. The provider has suspended billing operations in both countries since the attacks started six months ago, acknowledging the total loss of service in those specific geographic zones.

The financial impact of these strikes is substantial. According to reports from Forbes, Amazon has paid out approximately 150 million dollars in credits to customers in the Middle East to compensate for the lost services. This compensation reflects the direct cost of downtime and data loss, but it does not account for the intangible value of lost business records, client information, or proprietary algorithms. The incident highlights that cloud service agreements often lack adequate protection against geopolitical events.
