Volvo Extends Hybrid Life with 2028 EX60 Update

Volvo has quietly shifted its strategy, moving away from its previous 2030 goal of a fully electric lineup. Instead, the Swedish automaker is doubling down on plug-in hybrid technology to bridge the gap while pure electric infrastructure matures. This pivot is evident in the upcoming 2028 model year updates, which prioritize hybrid powertrains over a complete transition to battery-electric vehicles.

According to GN auto tech/ev, the company acknowledges that market conditions have not evolved as quickly as predicted. Rather than phasing out combustion engines immediately, Volvo is extending the life of its internal combustion models. The 2028 update represents a substantial refresh of the XC60, signaling that hybrids remain a central pillar of its emissions-reduction plan for the near future.

Design Evolution Continues

The exterior of the 2028 model retains the familiar silhouette of the current generation but introduces a more modern face. The front fascia features a slimmer grille and updated "Thor's Hammer" headlights that now include Matrix LED projectors. These adaptive lights automatically dim specific sections to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers, a functional improvement that enhances night driving safety without changing the car's overall shape.

Inside, the cabin updates are subtle but refined. The dashboard now incorporates textured wood trim and ambient lighting strips, replacing some of the previous gloss black finishes. While the 11.2-inch infotainment screen remains, it has been slightly repositioned for better visibility. However, the driver's display remains relatively basic compared to competitors, a trade-off that prioritizes simplicity over feature density.

Safety Systems Get Smarter

Volvo has added new ultrasonic and radar sensors to the front bumper to improve collision avoidance. The system now better detects crossing traffic and can warn drivers before opening a door if a cyclist or car is approaching. Additionally, the Pilot Assist suite gains semi-automated lane change capabilities, allowing the vehicle to steer during highway maneuvers with minimal driver input.

Hybrid Powertrain Remains Core

The primary mechanical update is the enhanced T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain. While the base model still uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, the hybrid option offers significantly better efficiency. This configuration allows drivers to travel short distances on electric power alone, reducing daily fuel consumption. The catch is that the high-voltage battery remains smaller than that of a dedicated electric vehicle, limiting the all-electric range to roughly 40 miles, which suits commuting but not long trips.
