Jellyfin Adds Live TV Without Hardware

You can now stream live television directly through the Jellyfin media server without buying an antenna or a hardware tuner. By using internet protocol television streams, users can recreate the traditional channel-surfing experience with just a couple of configuration links.

For many people who have cut the cord, the endless library of on-demand options can feel overwhelming. There is a specific comfort in simply turning on the television and watching whatever is currently airing. XDA Developers reports that you can now bring this live TV experience back to your home network using Jellyfin, a self-hosted media server, without needing any physical broadcast hardware.

The process relies on a concept called a virtual tuner. Instead of connecting a device to an antenna, you provide the server with a link to a list of internet streams. This allows the software to treat online video feeds exactly like traditional channels. It is a simple setup that takes only a few minutes, though it does require finding reliable sources for the video data and schedule information.

Finding the Right Stream Sources

To get started, you need two specific types of data links. The first is an M3U playlist, which is essentially a text file containing the web addresses for each video channel. It also includes basic details like channel names and logos. You can point Jellyfin directly to a file hosted online, so you do not need to store the data locally.

The second requirement is an XMLTV file, which provides the program guide. This data tells the server what is airing when, allowing it to build the familiar grid view. Without this guide, you would only have a list of channels and no idea what is playing. Ideally, both files should come from the same source to ensure the channel numbers match up correctly, otherwise, you will have to manually map them.

Configuring the Virtual Tuner

Once you have your playlist link, navigate to the Jellyfin dashboard and find the Live TV section under Administration. From there, you add a new tuner device and select the M3U type. Paste your link into the designated field and save the settings. The server will then begin importing the available channels, a process that may take a moment depending on the size of the list.

You should also check the simultaneous stream limit if your internet provider restricts how many connections you can make at once. Setting this limit prevents the server from trying to open more streams than your source allows. If the channels do not appear immediately, you can manually refresh the tuner from the settings page to force a re-import.

Managing Large Channel Lists

While the basic setup is straightforward, some users may encounter issues with large or messy playlists. If you want to filter out unwanted regional channels or combine multiple sources, tools like Threadfin or Dispatcharr can act as a middleman. These tools clean up the data before it reaches Jellyfin, which can help keep your server running smoothly and make the channel list more manageable.

The main trade-off of this method is that you are dependent on the stability of third-party internet streams. Unlike a local antenna, which works as long as the broadcast signal is strong, these streams can go offline or change addresses without warning. You will occasionally find a channel that refuses to play, so it is best to have a few backup sources ready.
