BMW iX3 Hits 100,000 Orders, Forcing 24/7 Production at New Plant

Unprecedented demand for the new electric SUV has forced BMW to run its Hungarian factory around the clock, creating a significant backlog for customers.
BMW has moved its Debrecen, Hungary facility to a continuous 24/7 schedule to manage a surge in demand for the iX3. The company added a third production shift after the second one was introduced in February, marking the fastest ramp-up speed for any new plant in the group's history. This operational shift is a direct response to a massive order backlog that has outpaced current manufacturing capabilities.
The primary driver for this intensification is a record-breaking 100,000 orders for the vehicle across Europe. While the plant reached the 50,000-unit production milestone in July, the gap between what is being built and what has been sold remains substantial. Consequently, customers are facing extended wait times as the factory struggles to keep pace with the initial wave of interest for this new model.
Rapid expansion meets high demand

The Debrecen facility began series production at the start of this year and is now operating at full tilt. The trade-off for this speed is a heavy reliance on immediate throughput. By running three shifts, the company is prioritizing volume over potential long-term flexibility in the short term. Future models in the pipeline
Looking ahead, the Debrecen plant is scheduled to begin producing a second vehicle from the Neue Klasse family later this autumn. However, the introduction of a second model may further complicate the logistics of clearing the current backlog.
