US DOT Creates New Space Task Force

The U.S. Department of Transportation has established a new internal group called the Space Policy Administration, Coordination, and Execution, or SPACE, Task Force. Led by Undersecretary Ryan McCormack, this body aims to create a unified strategy for commercial space transportation. The goal is to strengthen national security, boost economic competitiveness, and accelerate technological innovation by coordinating efforts across various federal offices.

Secretary Sean Duffy stated that the task force will implement the National Space Transportation Policy. This policy focuses on expanding launch infrastructure, simplifying regulatory processes, and integrating airspace management. Duffy highlighted that the United States accounted for 217 of the 329 global commercial space launches in 2025 and expects this number to rise significantly in the coming decade.

Coordinating Federal Agencies

The task force brings together experts from multiple USDOT offices, including the Federal Aviation Administration and the Office of General Counsel. By consolidating these roles, the department seeks to reduce bureaucratic friction. A key challenge in this area is the fragmentation of regulatory authority. Previously, different agencies handled different aspects of space operations, which could lead to delays. The new structure aims to provide a single point of contact for policy implementation, ensuring that federal goals align with the rapid pace of the commercial space industry.

Expanding Launch Infrastructure

The initiative includes plans to develop new space launch routes and invest in roadways leading to commercial space facilities. The department will also seek public input on the location of new U.S. spaceports. This approach allows for community engagement in infrastructure planning, a trade-off that may slow initial decision-making but aims to ensure broader support for new launch sites.

Streamlining Licensing Processes

A major focus of the SPACE Task Force is to simplify the licensing process for commercial operators. The goal is to make it easier for innovators to secure approvals for launching rockets and operating reentry sites. While streamlined regulations can accelerate deployment, they must still maintain rigorous safety standards to protect public safety and the environment.
