BYD Denza N8L Adds 960 Km Electric Option
Denza introduces a fully electric version of its N8L SUV, offering a 960-kilometer range and ultra-fast charging capabilities to compete in the premium family segment.
BYD’s premium sub-brand Denza has introduced an all-electric version of its N8L large SUV. The new model adds a battery-electric option to a lineup that previously consisted solely of plug-in hybrids. This move expands the choices available to families seeking a large, six-seater vehicle without the requirement of a gasoline engine.
The new N8L BEV starts at 299,800 yuan, approximately $44,280. It is powered by a 130.15-kWh second-generation Blade Battery and an 800-volt electrical architecture. According to CnEVPost, these specifications enable a claimed range of 960 kilometers under the Chinese CLTC test cycle, positioning it as one of the longest-range electric SUVs in the market.
Rapid charging requires infrastructure
The vehicle supports BYD’s flash charging technology, which promises to replenish the battery from 10% to 70% in just five minutes. Charging to 97% takes approximately nine minutes. However, this speed is contingent on using dedicated BYD flash charging stations.
As of late August, BYD had installed 10,000 such stations in China, with a goal to reach 20,000 by the end of the year. For owners in regions with limited coverage of these specific stations, the charging experience may be slower, relying on standard public charging networks. This creates a practical trade-off between peak performance and geographic availability.
Practical design for family use
The electric N8L retains the dimensions of the plug-in hybrid version, measuring 5.2 meters in length. It features a six-seat layout with a 2+2+2 configuration. A notable addition is a 208-liter powered frunk, or front trunk, which provides extra storage space.
This front storage area includes a capped drain opening, allowing users to rinse out sand or dirt easily. This feature is particularly useful for families who transport camping gear or outdoor equipment. The vehicle also includes rear-wheel steering, which reduces the minimum turning radius to 4.58 meters, making the large SUV easier to maneuver in tight urban spaces.
Advanced driving assistance included
The N8L BEV is equipped with the God's Eye 5.0 driver assistance system, which includes LiDAR sensors. This setup supports navigation-assisted driving on highways and in urban areas, as well as automated parking features.
The suspension system uses DiSus-A body control with dual-chamber air suspension and CDC dampers, aiming to provide a smooth ride over varied terrain. While these technologies add to the vehicle's complexity and cost, they enhance comfort and safety for long-distance travel. The launch broadens BYD’s portfolio of vehicles using its second-generation battery technology, catering to buyers with different preferences for powertrain types.
